Climbing Ropes

Choose a climbing rope to fit your chosen type of climbing. Single ropes are generally designed for sports climbs, where their strength and durability allow more frequent falls and aid the working of straight-up routes. Double climbing ropes should be used in pairs and are essential for long traditionally protected routes where they are clipped independently to ease rope drag. 50m is fine for many routes and saves weight; 60m is optimal for winter or alpine climbs where abseil retreat may be necessary, and covers most sport climbs; and 70m comes in handy for the longer sport routes. A dry treatment is essential in winter!
